The Hopkinton Center for the Arts (HCA) is a nonprofit 501-3c entity created to provide a variety of cultural opportunities for local artists and residents of Hopkinton and surrounding communities.  It will be a local home and hub for the creation and enjoyment of culture and the arts.

The HCA will respond to the growing demand for local artistic and cultural opportunities, without requiring a trip to Boston, Worcester, Providence or other MetroWest areas.  What makes the HCA’s concept unique is its broad-based aim to offer a large variety of art disciplines for a wide age range – offering “something for everyone” that will enhance the local quality of life.

The HCA Vision

The HCA facilities will include a theater, art gallery, art and music classrooms and meeting spaces where the community can connect through the arts; a place where creativity flows and cultural opportunities abound. The facilities will allow individuals and organizations to collaborate, create and present quality visual and performing arts, arts education, and events.  Just imagine…. The Center will be a site for a variety of high quality offerings for all ages. Workshops and classes … Lectures … Children’s plays … The popular USO Show … Art exhibits by local artists … A site for performers of all kinds….

HCA Facilities

The HCA complex is being developed at the historic 2-acre farm parcel at 98 Hayden Rowe Streetin Hopkinton, which the Town has set aside for cultural use. The parcel includes a 100+ year old dairy barn, farmhouse, grain silo, garage, and two “outer buildings”.  The three-phased project includes: renovating the farmhouse, renovating the barn, building a theater and reviving the property. This project is being funded by private donors, fellow citizens, and contributions from the town’s Community Preservation fund. In this way we can strengthen our local quality of life without burden to the tax payers or ultimately to the HCA, which will begin its existence with no liabilities (an advantageous position for a new organization.)

The complex already has much vitality.  The farmhouse is used for music, art and theater classes, gallery shows and boutiques as well as serving as the home for both the CAA and ESL.  The outdoor amphitheater is used for open air performances.  The garage has been tapped for craft shows.

Each phase is bringing something new to the local community – we don’t have to wait for all three phases to be completed before we can benefit!  Phase One allowed us to increase our program offerings and, importantly, resulted in the CAA/ESL partnership.  The expanded space created from Phase Two will allow us to further expand diversify our programs: our class offerings in art and drama will be complemented by new classes in pottery, film making, and dance.  A community lecture series will be developed, and performance events will expand.  The theater that will be built in Phase Three will result in increased opportunities for performances and shows.

The Story behind the HCA

The vision for an arts center began over a decade ago.  Hopkinton’s Cultural Arts Alliance (CAA) worked to refurbish part of the farmhouse at 96 Hayden Rowe into an arts facility and Phase One of the project, funded largely from town Community Preservation Act funds, was successfully completed.  Further work stalled, however, due to lack of manpower to continue the fundraising and planning efforts.  The local Enter Stage Left Theater (ESL) lacked space or finances to develop a space for its own needs, but did have a large number of volunteers and participants.  A CAA/ESL partnership was formed and jointly produced additional cultural programs such as a combined summer workshop of theater, music, and art for children ages 4-14, and a “props workshop” for children who wish to work “behind the scenes”.  The collaboration also brought new life and volunteers to the project.  The Hopkinton Community Endowment (HCE) joined the partnership, bringing considerable experience in fundraising and a larger community presence to increase broader awareness and interest in the project.  The Center for the Arts officially became a 501 3c entity in 2011, with Board members from each of the three partner organizations.

The Hopkinton Community Endowment (HCE) serves as a collective savings account for the residents of Hopkinton. As a charitable organization independent of local government, our mission is to raise and wisely manage funds for the benefit of our town, and ultimately to defray major capital expenses residents of the town approve through town meeting and local elections. In this way the Endowment helps lower property taxes and enhances the quality of our entire community.

Enter Stage Left Theater (ESL) is a non profit community theater in Hopkinton that offers coffee houses, a production schedule of 10 – 12 productions per year and a variety of classes in the theater arts.  Productions include adult dramas and musicals, comedy, a spring musical open to ages 4 through adult, large children’s productions, summer workshops for ages 4-14, a growing summer stock program for high school and college age students, and an original 1940s USO show with a full 15 piece swing band performed at the local venues.  ESL also directs two choral groups for ages 12 – adult, each of which perform in two concerts per year. ESL sponsors a play writing contest for high school and college age students, and has a scholarship program for high school seniors, as well as financial assistance programs for help with program participation fees. Classes range from “Musical Theater for Little Ones” to acting, improv and voice for all ages, to courses in makeup, play writing and set design.

The Cultural Arts Alliance of Hopkinton (CAA) is a dynamic non profit arts center in Hopkinton, MA that has been serving the town and the greater Metro West community since 1997. The CAA offers art classes for ages 4 through adult, art exhibits, a summer arts camp, and events such as the Summer Sunset Jazz Series.  It partners with local organizations such as the Hopkinton Senior Center and the Michael Lisnow Respite Center to offer classes and gallery space for members of those organizations. The CAA also opens its gallery space to local groups for artist receptions, community meetings and craft boutiques.
